Clean off your hearts, people of the world!

I really like this particular sentence, and I think it would be a great motivational sentence for any grassroots community organization looking into tapping into the better side of each human being.

The question remains – how?

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is one single recipe for each and every person. And I think that perhaps it’s the road traveled that is more important than the destination. In other words, I don’t think it is as much about the type of community we build – socialist, capitalist, republican – but rather about the way we go about doing it and the reasons why we do it.

After all, something done with the best of intentions – and truly done with the very best of intentions – can’t be held against us… Or can it?

I sent an email out to a couple of close friends after having published yesterday’s post, and here is an interesting ‘recipe’ I got. My friends and I polished it up and, with their permission, I’d like to share it with you.

Recipe for cleaning up the heart.

Preparatory steps.

a) Admit to yourself that there is a problem in the world and that you, little you, have the power to make a difference. A drop might feel like nothing when compared to the ocean, but an ocean is made of drops. Enough drops join in, a gigantic wave can be created.

b) Start reading. Don’t start big – start small. Read blogs, read the news, read editorials, then pick up a book or two, and try to start understanding a little bit of what is going on. Don’t be afraid to explore other people’s opinions, but never fall for it – analyze it in the spirit of figuring out the truth.

c) While working your gray cells, work out the rest of your body by participating in community service projects. You don’t have to be part of UNICEF or Greenpeace to make a difference. Remember, drop, ocean, wave, etc?

d) Persevere!!! You won’t change the world in a day, a week, a month or even a year. A drop can’t create a wave by jumping once. It has to try again and again, gathering momentum and inspiring other drops to participate.

And now I have an urge to go help out my neighbor as well as to swim in the ocean.
