Most of what I wrote previously about episodes 21 and 22 mostly had to do with episode 21 of Supernatural. And so today, I force myself to let go of my sometimes annoying habit of over-analyzing things and stepping forth into the analysis of episode 22.

After all, there are only 6 days left to the Season 5 premiere!

The big thing that really tickled me during this episode is the fact that, yet again, big brother Dean was left going after little brother Sam, to make sure that he didn’t do the big mistake he finally ended up making.

The good thing about this is that it really endeared Bobby even more to me, as this episode featured one of the best Bobby-moments to date:

Bobby, angry: Well boo, hoo. I am so sorry your feelings are hurt, princess. Are you under the impression that family is supposed to make you feel good? Bake you an apple pie, maybe? They’re supposed to make you miserable, that’s why they’re family!

And, to make it even better, Dean’s face while Bobby was telling him off was absolutely priceless.

So back to the issue at hand. I know that in this particular case, there is the unfortunate side effect of the apocalypse hanging in the balance, but that’s not the reason why Bobby wants Dean to go after Sam. It rather had to do with the fact that, well, Dean is the older brother and he has to ‘save’ his younger brother, something John, their father, was apparently not brave enough to do.

Bobby: You sounds like a whiny brat. No, you sound like your father. Well let me tell you something. Your Dad was a coward.
Dean: My dad was a lot of things, Bobby, but a coward?
Bobby: He’d rather push Sam away than reach out to him. Well that don’t strike me as brave.

While I agree that it can take a lot of courage to reach out to someone, and, from what we saw, John did have that issue with Sam – I don’t know if this applies to Dean. He tried, more than once, to understand what Sam was going through. They talk – probably as much as two guys with serious macho complexes can. And they managed to be together for the most of four years without trying to kill… Erm, without trying to kill each other without external forces at work.

I guess that would be a conversation for Bobby and I to have, except that he can be quite scary at times.

Bobby, to a recalcitrant Dean: Don’t make me get my gun, boy.

So where does the line end? How much is a sibling allowed/expected to do just because of the common genetic heritage? The fact that siblings get along and/or love each other deeply also affects this line – but by how much?

And does Dean have to keep running after Sam to save him if Sam doesn’t want to save himself?

SPN fans, 6 days left – 6 being, of course, the number of the devil.

I know, it has nothing to do with anything, but it’s still fun to point it out and pretend to be freaked out about it.
