There are many things one can count on around the time of Halloween: costumes, candy, and a wonderful debate on the usefulness of this day.
It can be argued that because of the costumes, the decorations and the baking, Halloween is a wonderful time to exercise creativity. I love it when it has to do with kids and creativity. There is nothing better on 31 October than seeing a child in a homemade costumes proudly explaining what kind of pirate she or he is. A close second are the various homemade goodies, especially those with pumpkin (bonus point to those that combine pumpkin with chocolate).
However, what with the ever increasing commercialization of Halloween, there is little left to create. You buy your costume, you purchase a couple of decorations and you pick up some baked goods at a chain grocery store.
So why continue with this tradition? Perhaps because it is the only day in North America that brings together perfect strangers. Think about it: when else would you feel perfectly comfortable knocking at the doors of strangers, or even at the door of neighbors you might barely know?
So despite the increasing commercialization of Halloween, it just might not be time yet to cancel it outright. Which comes as a relief, since I have not nearly had my fill of Halloween.

There is enough horror in the world without adding some imitation horror for show.
Dear Maria, you do make an excellent point! There are some people who like this kind of stuff, but I am getting the impression most people don’t. It would be nice to create a kind of Halloween in which there is a place for everyone – perhaps by keeping the most visible decorations not very scary, and putting the very scary ones in a place where people who like them can seek them out. I am sure there is a way of making everyone happy!
