Review: Supernatural, Season 5, Episode 1: Sympathy for the Devil – part I

And it’s finally here, a bittersweet moment, perhaps, but overall, an awesome one: Supernatural’s Season 5 premiere!

There is so, so much to say. I will leave the more heavy stuff for the week-end, as it is already quite late and I’m still in too guiddy a mood to write about serious matters. So let’s start with the lighter, more humourous and ‘fan-girl’ part of the review.

First off, I love the new intro (i.e. the blood spilling over), although it’s also a pretty bad omen as to what is waiting for us this season.

Second of all, Zachariah really isn’t kosher (pardon the pun). Certainly an angel doesn’t act in such a way. Perhaps he’s really Lucifer’s friend? Perhaps he used to be Lucifer’s best friend and feels so betrayed that he wants to take care of it once and for all? More on that later.

Third, Becky just has to be some sort of quirky homage to all the psycho fan girls out there. I died of laughter during that scene, especially at Dean’s face as Becky steps towards Sam to touch his chest.

Fourth, the whole Bobby being possessed thing – scary, and the only thing that made me start feeling sorry for Sam (when demon-possessed Bobby told him to ‘lose his number’ when everything is over).

Fifth, Dean being Michael’s sword really is an odd thing, especially since Zachariah was basically bribing him into accepting it. Which begs the question – what’s the difference between what Zachariah tried to do with Dean and what Lucifer did with Nick?

Sixth, why Nick?

And, last but not least, some of my favourite great lines from this episode:

Chuck, explaining what happened to Castiel: He exploded. Like a water balloon of Chunky Soup.

Dean, surprised at Sam’s lack of craving for demon blood: Supernatural Methadone.

Sam: Becky, you can quite touching me.
Becky: No.

Dean, looking at Michael’s picture: That kid’s tough? Looks like Cate Blanchett!

Dean, hand on his chest in pain: What, did you brand us with it?
Castiel, matter of fact: No, I carved it on your ribs.

Nick, after ‘Sarah’ tells him she’s an angel named Lucifer: Sure. OK. Would you do me a favour, Satan, and remind me to quit drinking before bed?

And my favorite line of this episode:

Dean, in the storage unit, coming face to face with Zachariah: Oh thank God the angels are here.

  1. lol I just have to comment here because your favourite line of the episode is mine too! I don’t know why but I fucking ADORED that line. I laughed my ass off. Its a great line but the execution was perfect and I couldn’t imagine Dean saying anything else! Great great line!

    1. He he he – I’m glad to hear it’s your favorite line, too. And I agree – the execution was perfect! There are so many great one-liners in each episode of SPN that I am certain there are other really good ones we don’t see or get. Start rewatching!

    1. I don’t quite know… That’s really odd actually. But you can view it on the Amazon website, and it’s only 1.29$. That’s what I do when I miss an episode, since we can’t stream Supernatural from here!
