Roll up them sleeves, we’re getting down to business

OK, enough already. It’s been four days – more than enough time for Barack Obama to get down and cracking. And it’s about time that the rest of us to also get to work.

First order of business: we need to figure out how, as a society, we got ourselves into this big, fat mess we call life on planet Earth in 2009. We have everything at our disposal for everyone who lives on this planet to have a beautiful life, and yet, well… It’s not working that well. Where have we gone wrong?

Surprisingly enough, I might have gained a little insight from the most irrelevant of places.

For those of you who have been following this blog long enough, you will recall that I’m still recuperating from a pretty bad ankle sprain (it’s been almost three months, believe it or not). And while it has been quite the troublemaker, this sprained ankle has also provided me with an amazing opportunity to see the world from a (rather slow) perspective. No wonder older people are so wise – they have time to see things that, in our rush to get from one place to another, we miss all the time.

Not that I’m old. Yet.

One thing I have noticed is that everyone, and I mean everyone, lives in the own little bubble. For whatever reason – survival, selfishness, exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed, being part of the iPod generation – we tend to stick to the world as it defines itself within our very limited bubble.

Unfortunately, if we are to survive as a species, we need to look way beyond our little bubble. I remain convinced that most people roaming the surface of our planet at more Gandhi than Cheney, and that most people have hearts of gold under a layer of modern day consumerism and materialistic crass.

So in conclusion: clean off your hearts, people of the world!
