Review of ‘The Devil and Dayna Dalton’, by Brit Lunden

Brit Lunden The Devil and Dayna DaltonYou might recall that I was delighted by the first book in this anthology, Bulwark, but that the next book I read, The Knowing, left me a little disappointed.  It was a well written book and a lovely story, but I felt that there was no creepy paranormal element to it like Bulwark had.

I do feel that Bulwark remains the strongest title amidst the three that I have read, but The Devil and Dayna Dalton, while lacking a little bit on the Stranger Things feel of the first one, definitely holds its own.  And the best (and smartest part) is that this one really, really whets your appetite.  Without giving too much away, the main questions that remain at the end of the book are:  Who is this “devil” character?  What can he and can’t he do?  What will he do?  And what will Dayna’s level of involvement be?

I can even see, now, how readers (including myself) can enjoy The Knowing much more than I originally did after reading a couple of other books in the anthology.  After all, it’s always nice to get to know more about a fictional world we get addicted to, and the Bulwark Anthology is definitely addiction material.  I understand that there are eight authors involved in developing this anthology, so chances are that the various novels will be potentially quite different from one another.  But, much like the world of phenomena like The X-Files and Stranger Things end up becoming richer thanks to the diversity of voices involved in the conversation around it, I can see how this anthology, as a whole, could become very satisfying and incredibly addictive.
